Job Summary:
The Domestic Violence Housing Advocate (Shelter) works as part of the Community Housing Team, and
closely with shelter staff to provide housing assessment and placement services for domestic violence survivors residing in the agency’s emergency and transitional shelters. The Housing Advocate also works closely with lead agency staff of the Coordinated Entry System (CES) and Homeless Family Solution System (HFSS) to identify housing resources and educate service providers about the specific needs of domestic violence survivors. This position is co-located at the emergency shelter, transitional housing program, and community housing office.
Duties:
Assess participant needs upon entry into shelter and develop individualized housing plans.
Provide advocacy, referrals, housing placement assistance, unit location support, financial literacy education, and follow-up services.
Work with landlords and property management companies to create housing opportunities for
survivors.
Assist participants with completing applications for various housing opportunities and obtaining supporting documentation.
Conduct short presentations to community partners on domestic violence services and how to work effectively with survivors.
Liaison with the agency’s Residential Manager’s to ensure that residential participants’ housing needs are being met.
Represent Rainbow at community meetings related to homeless services.
Manage and document services in a timely manner.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred due to high population of Spanish speakers.
BSW/BA with 2 years related experience preferred.
Priority given to those with case work experience in crisis intervention and community-based setting, particularly dealing with survivors of intimate partner violence.
Knowledge of DPSS, DCFS, and public systems that address housing/homelessness preferred.
Knowledge of financial literacy issues preferred.
Interest in addressing social justice issues affecting families and vulnerable groups, and a
commitment to the movement to end intimate partner violence.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially with Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs.
Proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. required.
California ID or Driver’s License required.
Proof of current automobile insurance detailing coverage required for licensed drivers. The state-mandated 40-hour domestic violence training is required and can be provided upon hire.
